SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher's Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) made it into the championship finals of the 200-yard individual medley at the 2013 Landmark Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships this evening.
The freshman posted the seventh-fastest time (2:02.81) earlier in the day during the preliminaries, but was clocked at 1:57.05 in the finals, good for third place and 16 points for the Gophers. Richter finished behind only Chadd Lee from Susquehanna (1:54.28) and Chris Scott from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1:55.95).
Goucher earned an additional two points in the 200 IM thanks to Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont), who was in the consolation finals and placed 15th overall (2:05.79).
The Gophers had two swimmers in the consolation finals of the 50-yard freestyle: Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) completed the event in 22.29 seconds for 10th place and Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) in 22.70 seconds for 16th place.
Goucher's entry of Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md.), Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), Davis and Cha secured 28 points by placing fourth overall in the 200 free relay (1:48.98).
The Gophers were on pace to place fourth in the 400 medley relay before being disqualified, which cost them one place in the team standings. After the six events conducted on the opening day of the three-day meet, they are in seventh place with 54 points.
Despite the disqualification, Colin Richter was credited with breaking the school record in the 100 backstroke with his split time in the 400 medley relay. He swam the opening leg and was clocked at 53.68 seconds, which betters the former record of :53.71 established in 2011 by Kyle Williams.
