Richter Twins Combine for Five First-Place Performances
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Three freshmen played a major role in helping Goucher put forward a respectable challenge to Susquehanna today in the first meet of the 2012-13 season for both teams.
Although they were beaten by the Crusaders, 151-105, the Gophers (0-1) took first place in seven of the 12 individual events and they pulled off a 1-2-3 finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
First place in the 500 free went to freshman Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), who completed the event in 5:10.24. Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) followed in second (5:11.33) and Danny Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) placed third (5:13.28).
Richter also touched first in two other events: the 200 free and the 100 butterfly. He was clocked at 1:50.19 in the 200 free and :55.41 in the 100 butterfly; only four individuals in the history of Goucher's men's swimming program have posted faster times in the 100 butterfly.
Freshman Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), nearly duplicated his twin brother's performance of three first-place finishes. Instead, he took first in the 50 backstroke (:26.35) and 100 back (:5711), and second in the 200 individual medley (2:06.88).
Brower, who set the school record in the 1000 free last season as a freshman, won that event in today's meet as he was clocked at 10:45.72.
Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) also provided Goucher with a first-place effort by winning the 50 butterfly (:24.36).
Although he didn't finish first in an individual event, freshman Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) was runner-up in both the 50 breaststroke (:28.81) and 50 free (:23.43).
There were only two individual events in which the Crusaders (1-0) denied the Gophers both first and second place: the 100 free and the 100 breast.
