Cardinals Overtake Gophers in Meet's Fifth Event
TOWSON, Md. — Thanks to first-place performances by one of Goucher's entries in the 200-yard medley relay, Danny Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) in the 200 free, the Gophers held a 40-34 lead over Catholic in today's Landmark Conference meet after four events.
M. Richter Takes First Place in Butterfly Events, 200 Free
TOWSON, Md. — Thanks to first-place performances by one of Goucher's entries in the 200-yard medley relay, Danny Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) in the 200 free, the Gophers held a 40-34 lead over Catholic in today's Landmark Conference meet after four events.
By the time the fifth event was over, however, the Cardinals were in front, 48-45, and on their way to a 151-111 victory over head coach Thomas Till's squad.
The Gophers (0-2, 0-2 Landmark) picked up 11 points for taking first place in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis), Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) completed the event in 1:40.37.
At the outset of individual events, Carroll and M. Richter secured nine points apiece by touching first in the 1000 free (10:41.75) and 200 free (1:48.43), respectively. In the 100 backstroke, Brower was the runner-up as he was clocked at :55.43.
The Cardinals (2-1, 1-0 Landmark) went ahead by outscoring the Gophers, 14-5, in the 100 breaststroke where Goucher's Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) placed second in 1:07.39.
From that point forward, the only Goucher swimmers to place first were M. Richter in both the 100 (:54.83) and 200 (2:06.52) butterflies, and Brower in the 500 free (5:10.41). Nelson turned in another second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:26.55), while the following were runners-up: Cha in the 50 free (:23.05), C. Richter in the 200 back (2:07.60) and 200 individual medley (2:06.64), and Leonard in the 100 butterfly (:57.28).
