Gophers Dominate Bison, Gain First 2012-13 Victory
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher produced the winner, the runner-up and the third-place finisher in the first four individual events in today's home meet against Gallaudet. The prodigious start got head coach Thomas Till's swimmers off and running toward their first victory of the 2012-13 season, a convincing 135-43 triumph over the Bison.
Four 1-2-3 Finishes Lead to Convincing 135-43 Triumph
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher produced the winner, the runner-up and the third-place finisher in the first four individual events in today's home meet against Gallaudet. The prodigious start got head coach Thomas Till's swimmers off and running toward their first victory of the 2012-13 season, a convincing 135-43 triumph over the Bison.
The Gophers (1-4) came out of the 200-yard medley relay with a 15-2 lead, which grew to 79-12 with the four successive 1-2-3 finishes. The first one came in the 1,000-yard freestyle where Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) secured nine points for being the first to finish, doing it in a time of 10:24.50. Danny Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) picked up four points for being the runner-up (10:44.89) and Eben Holbrook (Tunbridge, Vt./Hanover) scored an additional two points for placing third (15:56.73).
Sixteen more points came Goucher's way in the 200 free thanks to Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) taking first (2:00.13), Dean Silverman (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) second and Justin Jeffries (Riverside, Calif./La Sierra) third. Their respective times were: 2:00.13, 2:03.15 and 2:17.07.
The three Goucher swimmers who completed the 50 free ahead of any entrant from Gallaudet were Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) in first, Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) in second and Colin Hemond (Chicago, Ill./Northern) in third. Richter's winning time was :23.06, while Nelson and Hemond were clocked at :23.35 and :27.30, respectively.
Goucher's final 1-2-3 finish of the meet was in the 200 individual medley, won by Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) in a time of 2:12.92. Second place went to Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and third to Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), as they turned in times of 2:18.66 and 2:26.98, respecitvely.
The first-place finishers in individual events the remainder of the meet were: Patrick McNeel (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) in the 100 butterfly (1:02.41), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) in the 100 free (:51.90), Jared Herrmann (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) in the 100 backstroke (1:02.41), Nelson in the 500 free (5:21.30) and Morgan Richter in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.86).
The Bison (0-4) were not able to outscored the Gophers in any of the meet's 11 events, which included two relays.
Goucher's entry of Cha, Colin Richter, Nelson and Leonard took first place in the 200 medley relay (1:49.54) and the foursome of Brower, Hemond, Silverman and Leonard completed the 200 free relay in 1:40.37, good for first place.
