M. Richter Breaks Teammate's School Record in 100 Fly
YORK, Pa. — While Goucher was a member of the Capital Athletic Conference and even since, victories over Salisbury and York in the sport of men's swimming have been extremely rare. That's what makes the wins head coach Thomas Till's squads pulled off this evening all the more remarkable.
The Gophers invaded York's Natatorium for a triangular meet and conquered both the Sea Gulls, 129-73, and the Spartans, 127-71.
Five different Goucher swimmers placed first in at least one individaul event, plus the Gophers (3-4) began the meet with a first-place performance in the 200-yard medley relay. Goucher's entry of Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge), Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) posted a time of 1:40.98 to beat out a foursome from York by just 1.58 seconds.
In four of the nine individual events which followed, at least two Goucher swimmers finished ahead of any swimmers from either York or Salisbury. And in the 200-yard individual medley, the Gophers pulled off a 1-2-3 finish.
Morgan Richter touched first in both the 200-yard freestyle, which he completed in 1:47.25, and the 100-yard butterfly. His winning time in the 100 fly of :53.28 breaks the school record of :54.00 Leonard established last year at the Landmark Conference Championships. Leonard, ironically, was runner-up in the event this evening with his time of :54.84.
Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) took first place and Danny Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) was the runner-up in both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. Brower was clocked at 5:05.66 in the 500, plus he also came close to breaking his own school record by completing the 1000 in 10:19.60. Brower took over ownership of the school record in the 1000 free when he registered a time of 10:19.39 last season, also in York's Natatorium.
Carroll's times were 5:11.16 in the 500 and 10:30.11 in the 1000.
Colin Richter led the 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM with his time of 2:02.43 and was the first to complete the 100 backstroke (:55.07). Brower placed second in the 200 IM (2:06.03) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) was third (2:08.12).
Goucher's remaining first-place efforts came from Cha in the 100 free (:49.45) and Nelson in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.95).
For Salisbury and York, this was a Capital Athletic Conference meet and in the head-to-head battle between those two schools, the Spartans (2-5-1) turned back the Sea Gulls (2-5), 112-92.
