ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Goucher won five of the 11 races contested at today's tri-meet against host St. Mary's (Md.) and Marymount (Va.). Those victories helped the Gophers to a 131-74 triumph over Marymount, while St. Mary's was able to defeat to hold off Goucher by a 117-88 margin.
Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) and Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) each won a pair of races for the Gophers (4-1), while Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) topped the field in the 50-yard freestyle.
Today's meet began with the 400 medley relay, and the Goucher foursome of Colin Richter, Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge), Jerel McCord (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) and Davis came away with a third-place showing, just 1.61 seconds behind the first place squad from Marymount.
McCord then claimed third place in the 1000 free, touching in at 11:17.64. The first individual win of the day came from Morgan Richter in the 200 free. His time of 1:49.72 was over two seconds faster than anyone else in the field.
That began a string of four consecutive victories for the Gophers. After Davis' 50 free triumph, Colin Richter posted a 4:25.46 in the 400 IM which was well ahead of second-place Matt Walchuck from St. Mary's (4:29.20).
After that, it was back to Morgan Richter, who took first place in the 200 butterfly after his time of 2:00.98 edged out Grant Burgess from St. Mary's by seven-tenths of a second.
Colin Richter recorded the last top result in the 200 back, touching in at 2:02.68. Ross Miley from Marymount followed with a 2:03.87.
Goucher also received top three individual showings from Cha in the 100 free (51.82 – third), Morgan Richter in the 500 free (5:19.88 – third) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.85 – second).
The 400 free relay team for the Gophers, composed of Cha, Nelson, Dalton Delp (Summerville, S.C./Ashley Ridge) and Davis closed out the afternoon with a second-place result, six seconds behind the victorious team from St. Mary's.
Goucher can now look ahead to its first home meet of the season. The Gophers host fellow Landmark opponent Scranton at 1 p.m. next Saturday at the von Borries Aquatic Center.
