Goucher's 11 Race Victories Not Enough on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher earned first place results in 11 of the 14 races contested during this afternoon's meet against Marywood, led by three apiece from Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) and Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne).

The depth of the visiting Pacers (8-3), however, won out in the end, as the Gophers (6-3) could not manage any second place showings and they took third place in just two races. That allowed Marywood to edge out a 136-126 victory on Senior Day at the von Borries Pool.

Goucher led 124-121 heading into the final race, the 400-yard freestyle relay, but the Pacers claimed the top two spots in the event to clinch the meet.

Two victories each from Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) accounted for the Gophers' other individual race wins, while the 400 medley relay team of Colin Richter, Nelson, Morgan Richter and Davis (3:44.61) also came out on top to begin the afternoon.

Morgan Richter began his individual schedule in the 200 free, and his time of 1:48.02 beat his nearest competitor, Marywood's Zack Haney, by 0.83 seconds. His next race, the 200 butterfly, was not nearly as competitive, as Richter (2:00.66) bested the field by over eight seconds. He closed out the afternoon with a 2.03-second win in the 100 fly, touching in at 53.80.

Colin Richter's day started with a time of 55.56 in the 100 backstroke, comfortably ahead of the 58.18-second time registered by Marywood's Paul Kraycer. Richter also picked up victories in the 200 back (2:03.62) and the 200 individual medley (2:00.52).

Davis swept the two sprint freestyle events. He out-touched Dan Adams from the Pacers by 0.14 seconds in the 50 free, posting a time of 22.23, and the senior team captain followed that performance with a seven-hundredth of a second win in the 100 free. Davis recorded a time of 49.26 seconds to hold off Adams once again.

Nelson, meanwhile, claimed both breaststroke races. In the 100 breast, Nelson came in at 1:05.03 for a 2.48-second margin of victory over Evan Romines. He then recorded a time of 2:23.03 to top the field in the 200 breast.

In addition to Davis, senior Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge), currently studying abroad during winter break, was also recognized prior to the start of the meet for his contributions to the program.

This was Goucher's first meet since Yellow Jacket Invitational on December 5-6. The Gophers will return to the pool at Merchant Marine on January 31 in a tri-meet that will also involve fellow Landmark member Drew. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
