FREDERICK, Md. — Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) in the 200-yard individual medley was Goucher's only first-place performance at today's season-opening quadrangular meet, yet head coach Thomas Till's Gophers still managed to defeat two of the three opponents they faced.
Goucher recorded wins over Frostburg St., 115-87, and Stevenson, 150-35, but bowed to Hood, 131-71.
Richter's winning time in the 200 IM was 2:03.99.
The senior was also the runner-up in the 100 backstroke (:55.14), as he touched less than 8-tenths of a second after Chris Gardner from Hood.
The only other second-place performance for the Gophers (2-1) was turned in by freshman Blake Rhodes (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) in the 100 butterfly, where he was clocked at :56.89.
Goucher's best finish in a relay was second place in the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The entry of Andrew Coon (Cumberland, Maine/Greely), Jerel McCord (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side), Justin Prendergast (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) and Richter posted a time of 1:33.80.
The Blazers (4-0) produced the winner in six of the nine individual events and, in addition to their victory over the Gophers, they defeated Frostburg St., 126-76, and Stevenson, 144-24. The Bobcats (3-2) topped the Mustangs (1-3), 149-38.
Goucher will take part in a triangular meet with Marymount and St. Mary's (Md.) in St. Mary's City, Md. next Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
