Spartans Depart with 6-3 Win Over GophersBrooks, Covey Prevail in Singles Play for Goucher

TOWSON, MD — Goucher got a pair of wins out of the
middle of its singles line-up in a 6-3 loss to visiting York
The Gophers (3-8) trailed 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play with the lone win produced by Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga) and Wynn Thane (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) at No. 1. They turned back Ryan Fickes and Josh Kulp, 8-5.
The Ortiz-Thane pairing has achieved an 8-5 record in 2006-07, with six of the wins taking place in dual matches at first doubles.
Winners for Goucher in singles play were Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) at No. 3 and Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) at No. 4. Brooks defeated Dave Tabachnik 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (8); Covey earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Joel Trimmer.
At first singles, Tim Mowrer of the Spartans knocked off Ortiz 6-7 (6), 6-4, 1-0 (6).
