Nationally Ranked Eagles Silence GophersOrtiz, Thane Jump Out to 4-0 Lead at No. 1 Doubles
April 1, 2007
TOWSON, MD — Goucher could hardly have picked a
worse time to face nationally ranked Mary Washington — the
same day, right after being upset by Johns Hopkins. The Eagles
(13-6), obviously still smarting from their 5-4 loss to the Blue
Jays this morning, took it out on the Gophers this afternoon to the
tune of 9-0.
The Gophers (2-5) appeared headed for at least one win in doubles play when the tandem of Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga) and Wynn Thane (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Zach Detweiler and Randy Loden at No. 1. But the Mary Washington pair battled back to take the match, 8-4.
The Gophers managed to win only four games in singles play. At No. 1, Loden defeated Ortiz 6-1, 6-2.
The Eagles are currently at No. 9 in the ITA's Division III national rankings.
