April 23, 2007
TOWSON, MD — A sweep of the three doubles matches
and a split of the six singles matches allowed Goucher to pin a 6-3
setback on Villa Julie today.
Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga) was a 7-6 (5), 6-0 winner over Jason Cohen of the Mustangs at first singles after he and Wynn Thane (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) posted an 8-4 victory over Cohen and Ryan Morse at first doubles.
Like Ortiz, Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) and Mike Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) were winners in both singles and doubles play for the Gophers (6-9). Covey's opponent at fourth singles retired after Covey won the first set, 6-1, and at No. 2 doubles, Covey and Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) turned back Ryan Woodring and Doug Ammon, 8-3. Simon defeated Korey Garner 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles and, along with Doug Mangi (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall), downed Matt Kondilas and Michael Casalena, 8-5, at third doubles.
