Covey Goes Unbeaten at No. 4 Singles in 2006-07

TOWSON, MD — Goucher closed out its 2006-07 campaign today by knocking off Juniata, 7-2.

The Gophers (7-9), who finished with four victories in their final five matches, jumped out to a 3-0 advantage over the Indians (5-5) by sweeping the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga) and Wynn Thane (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) defeated Brandon Long and Casey Chew, 8-1.

Ortiz, who fashioned a 10-4 record at first singles in his first season at Goucher, picked up one of the Gophers' four wins in singles play by downing Jonathan Skoner 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1. At No. 3, Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter) topped Brandon Long 6-2, 7-6 (5); at No. 4, Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) handled Aaron Rhodes 7-5, 6-4.

Covey was undefeated in eight matches at fourth singles in 2006-07.

The only three-set match was between Mike Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) and Derek Dye at No. 6 and Simon prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).
