April 6, 2007
CARLISLE, PA — Chris Covey (Exeter,
NH/Exeter) secured the lone point for Goucher (3-7) today
in an 8-1 loss to Dickinson.
Covey dropped the first set of his match against Dickinson's Rich Rosenthal at fourth singles, 2-6, but prevailed in a tiebreaker, 7-3, to win the second set, which set the stage for a super-tiebreaker, which he also won, 10-8.
With the victory, Covey's record at that spot in the Gophers' singles line-up improved to 3-0.
No. 4 wasn't the only match decided by a super-tiebreaker. At No. 2, Hunter Holbrook of the Red Devils downed Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga) in the first set, 6-0, only to have Ortiz battle back to capture the second set, 6-2. Holbrook came out on top in the super-tiebreaker, 11-9.
The Red Devils (9-5) won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets.
Goucher's Wynn Thane (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) and Ortiz fell behind Whit McFarlane and Eric Schroeder, 7-2, at first doubles and then won four straight games before the Dickinson duo completed an 8-6 victory.
