WASHINGTON, DC — Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring,
MD/Gonzaga) was victorious at first singles for Goucher
today, but that was the only match the Gophers (2-4) were able to
win in an 8-1 loss to Catholic (7-6).
Ortiz took the first set from Andrew Kracht, 6-4, and then needed
to overcome a 5-3 deficit and prevail in a tiebreaker, 10-8, to
complete his straight-set victory. The win gives the freshman a 4-1
record at No. 1 singles this season.
All three doubles matches were competitive. At No. 1, Kracht and
Jonathan Lewis jumped out to a 4-0 lead and then had to hang on for
an 8-6 win over Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon
Schechter) and . John Dillon and Andrew Malone of the
Cardinals won by the same score at No. 2 over Ortiz and
Davin Safer (Philadelphia, PA/J.R. Masterman
School).
Ian Pepek and Nikolai Wajda defeated Mike Simon (Palo Alto,
CA) and Doug Mangi (Hamden, CT/Hamden
Hall) at No. 3, 9-8 (3).
