Ortiz, Thane Reach Semifinals in Top Singles Flight

TOWSON, MD — In Andrew Ortiz (Silver Spring, MD/Gonzaga) and Wynn Thane (Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), Goucher not only had two players that reached the Flight A semifinals in singles, but also the pairing that prevailed in the Flight A consolation finals of doubles play at the Goucher Invitational this weekend.

In the first round of singles play in Flight A, Ortiz downed Ben Michelman from Franklin & Marshall 7-6 (1), 6-2 and Thane won by default. In the semifinals, Ortiz suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Andrew Kracht from Catholic and Thane was beaten by John Dillon from Catholic 6-4, 6-4.

Two other players from Goucher reached the semifinals of their respective flights: Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) in Flight B and Doug Mangi (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall) in Flight D. Following a first-round loss in Flight C, Mike Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) of the Gophers battled back through the consolation bracket only to bow to Alex Witt from Franklin & Marshall 7-5, 6-2 in the finals.

In doubles play, Ortiz and Thane lost in the opening round before posting back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket, 8-1 over F&M's Michelman and Brett Joseph and 8-5 over Catholic's Kracht and Will Easterlin.
