Gophers Gain Initial Win by Defeating BobcatsWeiss, Simon Record Singles Wins, Victorious at Third Doubles

TOWSON, Md. - Billie Weiss (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) and Michael Simon (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) were victorious in singles play and partnered for a win at third doubles as Goucher turned back Frostburg St., 6-3, today.
Along with an 8-0 win over Josh Galvez and Jerry Castillo at second doubles by Steve Baum (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, NY/Solomon Schechter), the 8-1 victory over Cory Vandegriff and Jeff Lesky by Weiss and Simon provided the Gophers (1-2) with a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play.
Weiss pinned a 6-4, 6-0 setback on Castillo at No. 5 singles and Simon was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Ron Collins at No. 6. The Gophers still didn't seal their victory over the Bobcats (0-1) until Brooks defeated Phil Darden 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
The other three singles matches all went to a third set. At No. 1, Frostburg's Greg Shedd pulled out a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) triumph over Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter), and at No. 2, Andrew Gerst (Newton, MA/Newton North) fought off Matt Chisolm of the Bobcats 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9).
Galvez defeated Baum at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
