Rangers Justify Being Picked No. 1 in Preseason PollBaum Forces Third Set Before Going Down at No. 6 Singles

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher played its first Landmark Conference match today and was handed a 9-0 setback by Drew, the team picked in a preseason poll of coaches and sports information directors to win the inaugural Landmark title.
The Rangers (2-2, 1-0 Landmark) quickly seized control of the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Vikram Rao and Jon Pivor defeated Chris Covey (Exeter, NH/Exeter) and Andrew Gerst (Newton, MA/Newton North), 8-0.
Rao and Covey met up again in singles play with Rao recording a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1. Gerst was beaten at No. 2 by Jason Woods 6-1, 6-1.
The only singles match that went to a third set was No. 6 where Drew's Sayed Saber prevailed in the opening set, 6-1, but Steve Baum (Fallston, MD/Fallston) of the Gophers battled back to take the second set, 7-6 (10-5). In the super-tiebreaker, Saber came out on top, 10-7.
The Gophers (1-3, 0-1 Landmark) are 4-20 in singles play in the four dual matches they've completed so far in 2007-08.
