Barrera Gives Good Effort in First Appearance at No. 1 Singles

March 25, 2009

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton) appeared at first singles for Goucher for the first time in 2008-09 and put up a worthy battle against Gettysburg's Dale Beshore today. Beshore eventually put Barrera away, and the Bullets did the same to head coach Michael Vann's Gophers, downing them 9-0 and extending their season-long losing streak to five matches.

The Bullets (4-2) won all six singles matches in straight sets. Beshore ended up beating Barrera 6-2, 6-3, and Mike Leary earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Goucher's Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) at No. 2.

The Gophers (0-5) were able to win only one game in the three doubles matches. At No. 2, Brooks and Alex Vogel (New York, N.Y./The American School in Switzerland) were handed an 8-1 setback by Will Brinks and Terry Keegan.
