Spivey Makes Debut at No. 1 Singles, Registers 8-0 Victory
LANCASTER, Pa. — Goucher dropped only five games during doubles play and then pulled off a sweep of the six singles matches on the way to a 9-0 victory over Lancaster Bible today.
Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and David Spivey (Brooklandville, Md./Park School of Baltimore) were paired up at No. 1 doubles for the Gophers (2-5) and they defeated Taylor Lantz and Zak Kraehmer, 8-1. That was also the score at No. 2 where Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) and Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) represented Goucher and faced Brandon Klinger and Dan McAllister of the Chargers (0-5).
The six singles matches were reduced to eight-game pro sets and Spivey was at No. for the Gophers for the first time in 2010-11. The freshman turned back Lantz, 8-0. Baum disposed of Kraehmer, 8-4, at No. 2, Weiss downed Klinger, 8-3, at No. 3 and Csete came out on top of McAllister, 8-3, at No. 4.
Hemelt recorded an 8-5 victory over Davis at No. 5 and Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman) polished off Jesiolowski, 8-4, at No. 6.
This was Goucher's first 9-0 victory in the sport of men's tennis since the same two teams met last season on April 15.
