Gophers Go 0-3 in Doubles Play, Bow to Eagles

Baum Rallies to Win First Set in 7-5, 7-6 (2) Victory at No. 2 Singles

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) evened his record in singles play this season to 3-3 by picking up Goucher's only point during today's 8-1 Landmark Conference loss to Juniata.

Baum had to win the final five games to pull out the first set in his 7-5, 7-6 (2) triumph over Elliott Perow at No. 2. The senior was at No. 1 doubles along with David Spivey (Brooklandville, Md./Park School of Baltimore) for the Gophers (2-6, 1-3 Landmark) and suffered an 8-3 loss to Justin Wisniewski and Arnab Chakrabarti.

Wisniewski defeated Spivey at first singles 7-5, 6-2.

The Eagles (5-8, 1-3 Landmark), who enjoyed a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets. Brice Morey turned back Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and Chakrabarti fought off Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla./Brewster Academy) at No. 4, prevailing 6-4, 6-2. Scott Andrews came out on top of Dave Hemelt (Carney, Md./Loch Raven) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Matthew Butler earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) at No. 6.
