Weiss, Blackman Put Up Fight at No. 1 Doubles, Fall 8-4
YORK, Pa. — Goucher's chances of knocking off York were severely curtailed today when the Gophers dropped all three doubles matches. They shrunk even more when the Spartans prevailed at No. 3 singles and then entirely vanished once the featured No. 1 singles match concluded.
Gavin Smith's 6-1, 6-1 win over senior Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) at first singles provided York with an insurmountable 5-0 lead over the Gophers and the Spartans went on to capture the four remaining singles matches on the way to a 9-0 victory.
The most competitive of the three doubles matches was at No. 1 where Colin Jones and Travis Klein were paired together for the Spartans (1-0) and they turned back Weiss and sophomore Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa./J.R. Masterman), 8-4.
Up 3-0 heading into the singles competition, the Spartans moved within one point of clinching the match when Ryan Harvey downed senior Dave Hemelt (Parkville, Md./Loch Raven) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
The Gophers (0-1) dropped all six singles matches in straight sets.
