Freshman Picks Up Fifth Win at No. 1 Singles for Goucher

Gophers Drop All Three Doubles Matches, Bow to Blugolds

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — A freshman who has played exclusively at No. 1 singles for Goucher in 2012-13 picked up the only point for Goucher this afternoon during an 8-1 loss to Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) prevailed in a tiebreak to decide the second set, 8-6, to complete his 6-4, 7-6 victory over Ryan Vande Linde and improve to 5-1 in singles play this season.

The Blugolds (9-4) took the remaining five singles matches in straight sets. At No. 2, Florent Marco handed David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) just his second singles loss of the season as he defeated the junior captain 6-2, 6-3. Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) bowed to Michael Roden 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) fell to Brayden Parman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) suffered a 6-1, 6-0 setback to David Stingley at No. 5.

Benjamin Snyder (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) was in Goucher's singles line-up for the first time this season at No. 6, where he went up against Kyle Hoffmann. Hoffmann was victorious 6-0, 6-0.

Of the seven games the Gophers (1-5) won during the doubles competition, Hoesman and Spivey accounted for all but one as they battled Vande Linde and Joe Meier at No. 1 and were handed an 8-6 setback.
