Goucher's Top Doubles Pairing Suffers 8-1 Setback
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Goucher suffered a 9-0 loss today to a Division II opponent in its final match of its Spring Break trip here. In securing the victory, Kutztown won all six singles matches in straight sets and dropped only four games during the doubles competition.
Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) of the Gophers was handed just his second loss of the season in singles play by Rushi Amin, who registered a 6-0, 6-2 win over the freshman at No. 1. At No. 2, Matthew Maguire defeated David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) 6-4, 6-1.
Hoesman and Spivey were partnered together at No. 1 doubles for the Gophers (1-6) and they bowed to Amin and Maguire, 8-2.
Goucher's remaining two doubles pairings both managed to win only one game: John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) fell to Kenny Beebe and Varun Desai, 8-1 at No. 2; Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) took an 8-1 hit at No. 3 from Patricio Hernandez and Parth Girme.
Kutztown has won or shared 10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles in the sport of men's tennis over the past 13 years. Earlier this season, the Bears (4-3) posted an 8-1 triumph over Scranton, the first opponent on Goucher's schedule once head coach Brendan Kincaid's Gophers return home.
