Nelson Earns First Wins in Both Doubles and Singles
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher moved to 5-1 against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
since joining the Landmark Conference with a resounding victory today, 7-2.
This is the sixth straight win at No. 1 doubles for the Gophers.
The Gophers completed the sweep at doubles as the pairs of Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East)/David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) and Seth Manfield (Bethesda, Md./Emerson Prep)/Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) both won as well.
Murnin/Spivey topped Josh Levitas and Jeremy Guettein by a score of 8-5 while Manfield/Nelson defeated Muana Kawatachi and Phil Criswell 8-6.
In singles play, Hoesman defeated Tim Buxton 6-0, 6-1 and Spivey defeated Levitas 6-3, 6-3 to take the top two doubles spots.
At No. 4, Bescoby defeated Kawatachi 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match for the Gophers. Bescoby also clinched head coach Brendan Kincaid's first career win.
In addition to winning for the first time in doubles, Nelson won his first ever singles match, defeating James Karas in a super tie-breaker 6-4, 1-6, 10-8.
"We did a great job winning big points today," Kincaid said after the match. "Our guys came up huge when the pressure was on and we needed that effort today."
Merchant Marine (1-8, 0-6 Landmark) earned wins at third and fifth singles.
