YORK, Pa. — Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), who won 11 times at No. 1 singles for Goucher as a freshman in 2012-13, got off to a 1-0 start at that position in the singles lineup this season by winning his match today against York's Tyler Cheatham. But the Gophers came up with only one more victory in singles play as they bowed to the Spartans, 6-3.
Hoesman, who was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Cheatham at first singles, was also part of Goucher's only win during the doubles competiton. He and David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) took on Cheatham and Matt Rosenkrantz, and were victorious, 8-3.
Spivey appeared at No. 2 in the singles lineup for the Gophers and suffered a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Rosenkrantz.
A freshman playing his first collegiate match accounted for the only other point the Gophers (0-1) earned today against the Spartans (2-0): Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) knocked off Nathaniel Hoskins 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.
