HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Goucher concluded its participation in the Spring Tennis Fest today with a pair of defeats to Springfield and Carroll (Wisc.). The Gophers (4-8) dropped a 6-3 decision to Springfield to begin the day before falling 8-1 to Carroll in the afternoon.
Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) led Goucher with victories in three of his four matches, including a pair of wins against the Pride (4-2) in the opening match. Fujitani paired with John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, earning the Gophers' lone point out of the three doubles matches. He then cruised past Kyle Beynor for a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) claimed Goucher's other victory at No. 5 singles, besting Cody Rodrigues 6-4, 7-6 (6) for his second individual dual victory of the season.
The Gophers had an opportunity to edge out a victory, but Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) each dropped a pair of three-set matches at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively. Hoesman fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Tanner DeVarennes, while Spivey suffered a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 setback to Justin Danielewicz.
Fujitani grabbed another easy win against the Pioneers (2-7) to conclude the afternoon, topping Quentin Lammers 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. He has now won three straight singles matches, improving to 9-5 overall in 2013-14.
Carroll won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets. Fujitani and Bescoby came closest to picking up a doubles point for Goucher, but they ultimately fell 8-5 to Lammers and Eric Schneider from the No. 2 position.
The Gophers will look to get back on track this Sunday afternoon, when they return to conference play for a 1 p.m. home matchup against Scranton
