TOWSON, Md. — The only senior on Goucher's 2013-14 roster defeated his opponent at No. 2 singles in straight sets and he and his partner were also victorious at first doubles, earning two points that helped the Gophers turn back Hood, 8-1.
David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School), who has never played lower than No. 2 in the singles lineup during his four seasons at Goucher, was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Tyler Shuck in the final home match of his career. It was the senior's ninth win of the season in singles competition.
Spivey and Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) teamed up for an 8-2 triumph over Shuck and Anthony King to improve to 11-9 in 2013-14. The last two Goucher players to win 11 matches together were Andrew Danos and David Sands in 2004-05.
The Gophers (7-12) won all three doubles matches: Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) and John Bescoby (San Marino, Calif./Maranatha) topped Vladislav Sluchenkov and Philip Roedig, 8-3, at No. 2, and Pat Murnin (Salt Lake City, Utah/East) and William Felinski (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy) earned an 8-2 victory over Luis Cotto and Ray Rivera at No. 3.
Hoesman prevailed at No. 1 singles, as he picked up his 13th win of the season by knocking off Sluchenkov 6-2, 6-2.
Fujitani collected his team-leading 14th victory of the season as he handled King 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
The first singles match to be completed was Murnin's 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Rivera at No. 5. At No. 4, Bescoby polished off Roedig 6-1, 6-2.
The Blazers (1-12) secured their only point of the match at No. 6 singles where Cotto was a 6-2, 7-6 (2) winner over Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont).
The Gophers close out their 2013-14 campaign on Wednesday when they venture north into central Pennsylvania to take on Elizabethtown.
