Gophers Topple Regionally Ranked Marlins, 8-1

HILTON HEAD, SC – The Goucher College men's tennis team (6-5, Landmark 0-0) swept singles play against the Atlantic South's No. 15 regionally ranked team, Virginia Wesleyan, in an 8-1 victory to close out their 2017 Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, SC.

Goucher fell in No. 1 doubles, but dominated at second and third doubles with 8-1 victories coming from Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic)/Elliot Diehl (York, PA) and Josiah Meekins (Trenton, NJ)/Frankie Mullinix (Washington, DC), respectively.

Junior Jack Hodges (London, England) battled the Marlins', Paul Gladstone, at No. 1 singles, taking the first set 7-6 (6-4), 7-5. The win marks Hodges' 34th win at Goucher.

Freshmen Gophers, Herman and Mullinix, pulled in key victories at second and third singles, respectively. Herman handled Brendan Kelleher 6-3, 6-3 while Mullinix outlasted Andreas Combos 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).

Goucher dominated at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles. Diehl pushed past Joe Holloway 6-3, 6-2 while freshman Slade Dumas (Great Falls, VA) and senior Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan) dominated their opponents 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively.
