Men's Tennis Stays Undefeated at Home

BALTIMORE, MD. - Men's Tennis Opens fall 2016 season with 2 victories as freshmen pick up there first career wins.  

The Goucher College Men's tennis team opened up their 2016-2017 campaign with two victories over York College and Messiah College on Saturday, September 24th in Towson Maryland.  With the two victories, the Gophers ran their home win streak to an impressive 20 matches in a row.  The last time the Gophers dropped a match at home was in September of 2014 at the hands of the same York College Spartans.  In the first match of the day against York newcomers Frankie Mullinix(Washington D.C.), Mike Herman(Prague Czech Republic), and Slade Dumas(Great Falls, VA) notched there first ever doubles and singles victories for the Gophers as Goucher disposed of the Spartan team 9-0.  The only 3 set match was won by Sophomore Elliot Diehl(York, PA) 4-6, 7-5, (10-5) over York’s Sam Innerst at #1 singles.  

The Messiah match featured two teams who had qualified for last year's NCAA tournament.  Goucher dropped the first match at number 1 doubles  8-1, but rebounded  at the  number 2 and number 3 doubles positions winning 8-3, and 8-1, respectively.  Josh Goldberg(Centreville, MD) and Slade Dumas put on an impressive performance only dropping 1 game the entire day.  In singles play, Goucher won 5 out of the 6 possible singles points.  Slade Dumas clinched the match with 6-3, 6-3 victory over Austin Warren at #4 singles. 

Head Coach Brendan Kincaid was pleased to get in the win column to start the year and commented that "it was good for our guys to get out there and compete.  We got a chance to see some of our newest members of the team play, and I saw some improvement from our veterans.  We have a long way to go but I think today is something that we can build on to help us have another successful year." 

The 2-0 Gophers hit the road to play Penn State Harrisburg (1-0) on Tuesday, September 27th, at 4:00 pm.  The Gophers will look to continue their recent success against the Lions as Goucher has won the last three contests between them.
