Coaches Name Goucher as Men's Tennis Favorite in 2017
The coaches of the Landmark Conference have chosen Goucher College to repeat their success and take home the Landmark Conference men’s tennis title in 2017.
TOWSON, MD – The coaches of the Landmark Conference have chosen Goucher College to repeat their success and take home the Landmark Conference men’s tennis title in 2017.
Goucher earned six first-place votes to go along with 66 points to sit atop of the poll. Juniata College earned the remaining two first-place votes and 60 points to finish second. Catholic University and the University of Scranton tied for third with 34 points.
The Gophers are coming off a Landmark Championship in 2016, where they defeated Juniata in the finals, 5-2. After winning the title, Goucher moved through the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship over Yeshiva, 5-2, before eventually falling to Carnegie Mellon.
Key returners for the Gophers are junior Jack Hodges (London, England) and senior Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan) who posted 8-0 singles records in Landmark Conference play during the 2016 campaign. Overall, Goucher players went 43-5 in singles play during Landmark matchups.
The Gophers dominated in Landmark doubles play in 2016, accruing a 23-1 record en route to the title.
Over the course of the season, Goucher went 20-5 as a team, setting a new Landmark Conference record for wins in a season.
