The Goucher College men's tennis team made history on Thursday, as the Gophers are ranked 17th in the latest Oracle/ITA Division III Atlantic South Regional Rankings. The ranking for Goucher in the poll is their first since 2005.
Meanwhile, in singles, first-year Tetsuya Ota (Winter Park, Fla.) is ranked 23rd in the Atlantic South Region, as well.
Goucher, who has won back-to-back Landmark Conference Championships, is off to a great start to their 2017-18 season, as they sit at 13-3 overall entering the start of Landmark play this weekend.
On the year, the Gophers have shutout four opponents, posted three 8-1 victories and four 7-2 wins. Goucher also bested a nationally-ranked NJCAA opponent in Harford Community College in an exhibition match, 7-2, on March 10.
Ota, meanwhile, has been impressive in his first year in the program. So far, he is 11-4 in singles action for the season, winning nine of those matches in the number one spot of the Gophers' singles line-up.
Ota, who is 7-3 in his last 10 singles matches, advanced to the round of 16 in the Championship Singles flight at the ITA Southeast Regionals back in October – the furthest any Gopher has gone in the flight under head coach Brendan Kincaid. He has also been named the Landmark Conference's men's tennis athlete of the week, earning the honor back on Feb. 26.
