Our second All-Goucher First Team selection is another first-year student-athlete - Tetsuya Ota (Winter Park, Fla.) of the men's tennis team.
Ota was terrific in his first season in the Gopher men's tennis program, as he was one of the leaders of a team that won a school and Landmark Conference record 24 matches throughout the course of the season, en route to their third straight Landmark Conference title.
The Gophers then went onto the NCAA Tournament where they rolled past Messiah in the First Round (5-0) to take an opening round match in the Championships for the second time in school history.
From the start, Ota was impressive in both singles and doubles for Goucher.
In the fall season, Ota made his presence felt when he advanced to the Round of 16 in the Championship Flight of the ITA Southeast Regionals, the farthest a Goucher men's tennis player had advanced in that tournament since 2005.
His stellar play continued into the spring, where he finished the year with an 18-7 overall mark in singles, going an impressive 16-6 in the number one spot of the Goucher line-up. It was more of the same for Ota in doubles, where he and partner senior Jack Hodges went 16-11 (15-10 at number one).
For his efforts, Ota was named to the All-Landmark Conference First Team at both singles and doubles, while also earning Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year honors. He also notched Landmark Conference Championship MVP accolades after going a perfect 4-0 at singles and doubles during the Landmark playoffs in victories over Susquehanna (5-0) and Scranton (5-2).
Ota is the second All-Goucher First Team selection to be announced, joining fellow first-year Steph Lee of the men's golf team to be announced so far.
The third member of the All-Goucher First Team for 2017-18 will be announced on Wednesday at 12 p.m. For more on the All-Goucher Team, click here.
