BALTIMORE, Md. – Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 4-10, 2019. It is the second time the sophomore has garnered the recognition by the league.
Ota helped the Gophers to a 5-4 win against Washington College (Md.) on Friday with a pair of victories. The sophomore teamed up with Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nova Porg) to win an 8-6 match at No. 1 doubles for the duos first doubles win of the season. Ota then clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Ota is 3-2 this season as the No. 1 singles player for Goucher and is 21-9 overall as the No. 1 singles player in his two seasons with the Gophers. Ota and Herman have a 3-4 career record at No. 1 doubles while Ota was also 16-11 last season with Jack Hodges at No. 1 doubles. The sophomore was the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and an all-conference first-team selection in 2018-19 to help the team to its third-straight conference tournament title.
It is the first time this season that Goucher has earned Landmark Conference Player of the Week honors for men's tennis. The Gophers earned the honor five times last season including Ota taking home the honor for the week of February 19-25, 2018.
