Dumas Leads Goucher Men's Tennis On Senior Day To Win And Ties Program Career Singles Win Record
BALTIMORE, Md. - Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) won the first match of his career on September 24, 2016, and he celebrated Senior Day with most likely the longest match of his career to tie the program record for career singles wins on Wednesday. That win also handed Goucher College a 5-4 decision against the Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference men's tennis action.
For the second time in Dumas' career, his singles match decided the team winner. Dumas and Frankie Fortunati split the first two sets after Fortunati took the first set 7-5, and Dumas earned a 6-2 second-set victory to send the match to a third set. Since the team match was tied at 4, the two played a full set to decide the outcome. Dumas grabbed a two-break lead before Fortunati broke back once and held serve to have Dumas serve for the match at 5-4. The senior served the ball on match point and traded three baseline rallies with Fortunati before Fortunati hit the ball into the net to secure the win and a piece of history for Dumas.
Dumas is now 64-21 in his career and is tied with Midiori Futijani (64, 2013-17) for the program's all-time career wins record. Coming into the match, Dumas was 3-3 in third-set matches, and the only other team-clinching match Dumas played was against Bridgewater on February 25, 2017. Wednesday was the senior's first three-set team-clinching win.
Goucher will square off at Catholic on Saturday at 12 p.m. Dumas and Fortunati will most likely battle at No. 1 singles for the second time in four days, and Dumas can make more history. With a win, Dumas stands alone as the program's all-time career leader in wins with 65, and he would also tie the Landmark Conference career singles win mark.
Catholic did not make it easy on Dumas on his big day in doubles either. Dumas and Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) won at No. 1 doubles, 8-7, thanks to a 10-3 tiebreaker win.
Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) continue to roll in doubles and singles. The duo won at No. 2 doubles 8-0 to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead going into singles. Kane gave the Blue and Gold its third team point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Cerpa followed right behind Kane with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
Adembamgbe fell at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Alex Dominguez dropped his No. 5 singles match, 6-1, 6-1. Goucher defaulted at No. 3 doubles, and No. 6 singles to set up the dramatic outcome at No. 1 singles.
