After Record-Breaking Week, Slade Dumas Nabs Second Landmark Conference Athlete Of The Week Honor This Season
BALTIMORE, Md. - Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of April 19-25. Dumas earns his second Athlete of the Week honor this season and fifth of his career.
Dumas won all of his matches in the week for both singles and doubles, but his two singles wins were historic events. Fighting 20 mph wind on Wednesday, Dumas played his second-ever three-set clinching match and earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against Catholic. With that win, he tied the Goucher College men's tennis career singles wins mark with 64 wins with former teammate Midiori Futijani (64, 2013-17). In a rematch against the Cardinals four days later, Dumas won his No. 1 singles match in the nation's capital, 6-2, 6-0, to become the program's all-time career leader with 65 singles wins. He also ties Juniata's Bryan Gregory (65, 2012-16) for the Landmark Conference record. Goucher defeated Catholic in both matches on the week by a score of 5-4 with Dumas' match being the deciding match both times. Dumas and his doubles partner Omosesan Adebamgbe also won their doubles matches in the week, earning an 8-7 (7-3) win on Wednesday, and an 8-5 win on Saturday. The duo is now 13-1 in conference action.
Dumas is 65-21 in his career, including 26-2 in conference action. The senior has won 58 matches in straight sets and has 32 wins when he allowed two games or less in the match (14 - 0 games; 9 - 1 game; 9 - 2 games).
It marks the fifth time in Dumas' career he has been named the Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week. He also took home the honor for the weeks of March 5-11, 2018, March 18-24, 2019, March 2-8, 2020, and March 29-April 4, 2021.
Goucher has won two of the four Athlete of the Week awards this season, and seven of the 11 awards handed out in the last two years. Dumas has three of those honors, while Adebamgbe (April 5-11, 2021) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) (September 30-October 6, 2020) have also been the Athlete of the Week during that span.
Dumas will have a chance to become the stand-alone Landmark Conference career singles wins leader in the Gophers' next match.
