Goucher Men's Tennis Starts Drive For Five Straight Titles Against Moravian In Landmark Conference Quarterfinals On Saturday
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Goucher College men's tennis team will begin its drive for five straight Landmark Conference Tournament title on Saturday, May 1 when the squad host Moravian College at the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl '62 Tennis Center. The match time is 1 p.m.
The Goucher College no outside spectator policy remains in effect for the postseason. Goucher athletics will provide live statistics and live video of all of the matches at athletics.goucher.edu/mtenlive.
In addition to the Goucher-Moravian quarterfinal match, No. 2 the University of Scranton will host No. 7 Juniata College. The winners of these two matches will play on Tuesday, May 4. Top seed Drew University hosts No. 8 Elizabethtown College, while No. 4 Susquehanna University will host No. 5 Catholic University of America. The winners of Drew-Elizabethtown and Susquehanna-Catholic will square off in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 4. Each round of the postseason will be played at the highest remaining seed.
Goucher defeated Moravian 6-3 on April 11 in Bethlehem, Pa., during the regular season The Gophers come into the match 6-2 while Moravian is 5-5 on the year, including 3-5 in league play.
In the regular-season meeting, Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) and Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) defeated Sean Kearns and Justin Szaro, 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Adebamgbe and Dumas are 6-2 this season and 25-6 in their career together. It was the only match this season that Szaro and Kearns played at No. 1 doubles. Szaro and Kieran Pisani are 5-4 on the year at No. 1 doubles.
Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) downed Pisani and Mason Hudnall 8-4 at No. 2 doubles in the regular-season meeting. Cerpa and Kane are 7-1 this season, while Hudnall and Pisani only played No. 2 doubles together for the match against the Gophers. Hudnall and Kearns are 6-3 together at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Dumas defeated Szaro 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 flight in Bethlehem. Dumas is 6-2 his season at No. 1 singles and holds a 65-23 record in singles for his career. With one win, Dumas will become the Landmark Conference career all-time leader in singles. Szaro is 7-8 in his collegiate singles career.
Adebamgbe beat Pisani 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Kane defeated Kearns 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Adebamgbe is 6-2 on the year in singles play after going 4-2 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 3 singles. Kane is 7-1 on the year with a 1-1 mark at No. 2 singles and a 6-0 record at No. 3 singles. Adebamgbe is 14-17 in his singles career, while Kane is 28-13 in his career in singles play. Pisani is 4-6 this season and 5-9 in his career in singles play. Kearns, who 0-2 at No. 3 singles and 0-3 at No. 4 singles, is 14-23 in his career in singles.
Cerpa defeated Hudnall in a three-set thriller in the regular-season meeting, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 10-7. Cerpa has won his last six matches in his first year in Baltimore and is 7-1 on the year. Hudnall is 7-3 on the year, including 6-3 at No. 3 singles and a 1-1 mark at No. 4 singles, and is 21-21 in his career in singles.
Alex Dominguez (Healdsburg, Calif./Healdsburg) lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to Steve Schneider on April 11. Dominguez is looking for his first collegiate win. Schneider is 3-3 at No. 5 singles and 4-0 at No. 6 singles for a 7-3 record in his first season, while Aiden Evans-Gartley is 2-4 at No. 6 singles.
Goucher will start the match trailing 2-0 after defaulting at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Unlike the regular season, the competition is halted once a team wins five team points, and any individual match still in action will be unfinished.
Goucher makes its sixth straight tournament appearance and holds a 9-1 record in the postseason with tournament titles in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Moravian is making its seventh tournament appearance and is 1-6 in the Landmark postseason. The last time the Greyhounds were in the postseason was the only tournament matchup with the Gophers, a 5-1 win for the Blue and Gold on April 28, 2015.
It will be the 15th meeting between Goucher and Moravian since the inception of the Landmark Conference. The Gophers have won the last seven meetings in the series to take an 8-6 margin.
Goucher is 7-0 at home in the postseason, but this match on Saturday will mark the first postseason match at the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl '62 Tennis Center.
Gophers head coach Eric Spangler is in his third season in Baltimore and looking to win his second title as a head coach after winning the 2019 title. The 2019 Landmark Conference Coach of the Year is 25-10 in his career with Goucher, including 13-2 in conference play. Mariana Freitas is the interim head coach for Moravian.
