Eric Spangler Steps Down as Men's Tennis Coach, Accepts Position at Haverford
TOWSON, Md. – Goucher College Director of Athletics and Associate Dean of Students Andrew Wu announced Tuesday that head men's tennis coach Eric Spangler will be stepping down from his position in order to accept the same position at Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, a member of the Centennial Conference.
"I first want to thank Andrew Wu for providing me this opportunity to learn and grow as a coach of this tennis program. This has been an incredible experience and I am thankful for all the relationships with the student athletes and coaches here," said Spangler. "I am very excited to take the next step in my career and advance the men's tennis program at Haverford College."
"It has been great to see Coach Spangler's growth after taking on his first head coaching job with us several years ago. He is on track for an excellent career and we wish him all the best," said Wu.
Spangler was named head coach of the Gophers in December, 2018 and was in the midst of his fourth season guiding the Goucher program. In his first season, Spangler was named the Landmark Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Goucher to the conference regular season and tournament championships as well as a 5-1 win against Baruch in the first round of the NCAA Championship. This past season he guided the Gophers to the Landmark semifinals and a 7-3 record.
During his tenure, Spangler coached one Landmark Conference Player of the Year and a total of nine All-Landmark selections, including four First Team accolades. He compiled a record of 24-9, including 15-2 in Landmark Conference play.
A search for Spangler's successor will begin immediately.
