ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - In a match that came down to the last singles contest, host St. Mary's College of Maryland edged Goucher College 5-4 in non-conference men's tennis Sunday afternoon at the Somerset Tennis Center.
- The Seahawks (3-0) took a 2-1 lead after doubles over the Gophers (0-3).
- Theo Lucke (Ahlen, Germany / Städtisches Gymnasium Ahlen) and Gabe Naftoly (Newburyport, Mass. / Berwick Academy) were 8-5 winners at third doubles.
- At No. 1, Tadeo Asprella (La Plata, Argentina / Instituto Jose Manuel Estrada) and Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) fell 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
- St. Mary's won two of the first three completed singles matches, with Cerpa winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
- Down 4-2, Goucher won the next two matches to forge a 4-4 tie.
- Esprella claimed a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 5.
- Naftoly pulled out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 to the the match.
- At No. 6, the Seahawks took a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Lucke to clinch the match.
- Naftoly and Asprella each improved to 2-1 this spring.
- The Gophers' home opener is set for Tuesday, March 14 against Kutztown.
