Gophers Split to Open Florida Swing Tuesday

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Goucher College men's tennis team split a pair of matches to open its Florida spring break trip on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus.  The Gophers downed Huntingdon 7-2 for their first win of the season, but were downed by Oglethorpe 7-2 Tuesday evening.

• Goucher (1-5) took two of three doubles matches and five of six singles matchups against the Hawks (2-4).
• At No. 1 doubles, Jackson Beam (Knightdale, N.C./Knightdale) and Calis Nguyen (Houston, Texas/School of the Woods) were 8-3 winners.
• Tadeo Asprella (La Plata, Argentina / Instituto Jose Manuel Estrada) and Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) were victorious by an 8-4 count at No. 2 doubles.
• Asprella won his No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-0.
• Cerpa, Nguyen, Gabe Naftoly (Newburyport, Mass./Berwick Academy) and Theo Lucke (Ahlen, Germany / Städtisches Gymnasium Ahlen) were all winners in singles action.

• Goucher fell behind 2-1 after doubles against Oglethorpe (4-5).
• Cerpa and Asprella prevailed 8-7 (7-3) at No. 2 doubles.
• Naftoly and Lucke dropped a hard-fought match at No. 3 8-6.
• Asprella also picked up a point in singles, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5.
• Beam dropped a three-set decision (2-6, 6-4, 10-7) at No. 2.

• Asprella moved to 5-1 in singles play this season, while Naftoly is second on the team with six singles wins.

• Goucher returns to action Wednesday at 7 pm, facing Luther at the USTA National Campus.
