Gophers Blanked at CNU in Spring Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Goucher College men's tennis team dropped its spring opener 9-0 to Christopher Newport at James River Country Club Saturday afternoon.

• The Captains (3-0) swept the Gophers (2-1) in doubles play.
• Calis Nguyen and Gabe Naftoly battled at No. 1 before falling 8-4.

• Unai Laguardia Alvarez dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 1.
• At No. 4, Nguyen fell 6-4 in the first set and was defeated 6-4, 6-2.
• Angel Cerpa was topped 6-1, 6-4 in his match at No. 5.

• Goucher and Christopher Newport met for the first time since the 2004-05 season, a 4-3 Gopher win.
• The Captains reached the NCAA tournament last season.

• Goucher travels to Salisbury next weekend for a pair of matches, taking on Virginia Wesleyan Saturday and the host Sea Gulls on Sunday.
• The Gophers are slated to be home Wednesday, February 28 when they host Kutztown and St. Mary's (Md.).
