Goucher Edges Out Moravian in Landmark Semifinals
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Goucher College Gophers hosted the Moravian University Greyhounds in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championships.
The Gophers jumped out early, securing the doubles point. Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel swept their opponents in the No. 1 matchup to win 6-0. The point was won by the No. 2 doubles team of Tadeo Asprella and George King, who beat their opponents 6-2. Due to the point being won the No. 3 doubles team of Guilherme Moraes and Jackson Beam went unfinished, despite their lead 5-4.
Goucher took the energy from the doubles win into singles, with Naftoly winning the point in the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Asprella followed shortly after with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 spot.
The Gophers dropped the next three singles matches, tying the contest 3-3. In the No. 4 spot, Calis Nguyen battled into a second set tie breaker, to try and force a third set on his opponent but just fell short with a 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) loss.
The semifinal match came down to the No. 6 singles match of King. The first set was quick, with King winning 6-0. The second set went back and forth, resulting in a tie breaker. After trading points in the tiebreaker, King was able to string points together to win 7-6(8-6), giving Goucher their 4th point and the semifinal victory.
The Gophers travel to a neutral site for the Landmark Conference Championships on Saturday, May 3rd. It will take place in South Williamsport, PA at the Central PA Tennis Center. The match is set to begin at 1pm.
