Gophers Sweep Spartans in Final Match of the Fall Season

BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (1-1 overall) capped off the fall season by hosting the York College Spartans (1-3 overall) in a non-conference match-up on Tuesday afternoon. The Gophers swept the Spartans, winning 7-0. 

The Gophers earned the doubles point, only dropping one match. The No. 3 doubles team consisting of Carlo Cermeno Cortes and Lucas Lucena fell in a close match 6-7. Guilherme Moraes and Ian Hewes made up the No. 2 team, beating the Spartans, 6-0. Goucher's No. 1 team including veteran players, Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel, swept their opponents, 6-0. 

The Gophers earned all six points in singles. In the No. 6 singles, Daniel Gigatti, beat his opponent (6-3, 6-1). In the No. 5 singles, Cermeno Cortes was forced into a tiebreaker with York (6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (11-9)). Hewes defeated York (6-1. 6-1) in the No. 4 singles match. In the No. 3 singles, Moraes swept his opponent (6-0, 6-0). In the No. 2 singles match, Rummel held his opponent to just four wins (6-3, 6-1). Naftoly defeated York (6-3, 6-3) in the No. 1 singles match.

The Gophers closed out their fall season today. They open up their spring season on Sunday, February 15th at Salisbury.
