Gophers Open Spring Season at 39th Ranked Seagulls
SALISBURY, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (1-2 overall) traveled to take on the Seagulls of Salisbury University(1-0 overall) on Sunday afternoon to open up their Spring season. Despite strong individual performances, the team fell to the Seagulls, 7-0
Salisbury opened the competition by clinching the point from the doubles, after No. 2 doubles, consisting of Tadeo Asprella and Ian Hewes, fell 6-0. The No. 1 team, Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel, lost, 6-2. Despite losing the point, the No. 3 team of Guilherme Moraes and George King won their match, 6-4.
The Seagulls proceeded to sweep singles, with the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches being the first to finish. Naftoly lost in the No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-4), while Asprella fell in a close contest in the No. 2 match (6-4, 6-4). Rummel won his first set 6-4, but dropped the next two 6-3, 6-3. No. 5 singles was the next match to finish, where Hewes fell (6-1, 6-4). Moraes fought through multiple tie-breakers in the No. 4 spot after dropping the first set, 3-6. He rallied, winning the second set 7-6(7-4), and fell in a tiebreaker 10-3. The contest was rounded out by Carlo Cermeno Cortes in the No. 6 singles, who battled through a close tie-breaker in the first set, falling 7-6(7-5), and then losing the second set 6-2.
The Gophers are back in action on Saturday, March 7th at 1pm when they travel to take on St. Mary's College of Maryland. The team returns home on Monday, March 9th for a match against Methodist.
