BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (2-3 overall) fell to the Monarchs of Methodist University (4-2 overall) on Monday afternoon, dropping the match, 5-2.
No. 1 doubles pair of Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel were the first to fall to the Monarchs 6-3. Ian Hewes and Tadeo Asprella paired up to take on No. 2 doubles, falling 6-3. The Gophers closed out doubles with a 6-4 win from No. 3 partners Guilherme Moraes and George King.
No. 1 Naftoly was the first to finish singles. He lost to Methodist (6-2, 6-4). No. 4 singles was the next match to be finalized. Moraes fell to the Monarchs (6-4, 6-4). In No. 5 singles, Hewes was defeated by Methodist (6-3, 6-2). Rummel finished next in No. 3 singles. He fell in the first set (6-1) but rallied back to take it to a tiebreaker. Despite a hard fought second set, Rummel lost in the tiebreaker 7-6(10-8). King won against the Monarchs (6-4, 6-3) in the No. 6 singles match. Finally, Asprella dropped the first set (6-4), but found momentum in the second set (6-3) to take him to a tiebreaker. He won in a nail-biter, 10-8.
The Gophers return to the court on Friday, March 13 at 3p.m. against Millersville University.
