Goucher Men Drop Close Contest Against Catholic
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Goucher College Gophers (7-4 overall, 3-1 conference) traveled to face the Cardinals of the Catholic University of America (9-5 overall, 4-0 conference) on Tuesday evening. The Gophers dropped the close match 4-3.
The Cardinals opened, sweeping doubles play in tight contests. The No. 1 doubles pair of Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel lost to the Cardinals in a tiebreaker set 7-6(7-5). In the No. 2 singles match, Tadeo Asprella and Ian Hewes fell to the Cardinals 7-5. The final doubles match featured Guilherme Moraes and George King taking on No. 3 Catholic, who also fell 7-5.
In No. 1 singles, Naftoly lost his first set 6-2, but came back to win the second set in an extended tiebreaker 7-6(13-11) and the third set 6-1. Asprella swept the first set in the No. 2 singles match, 6-0, then proceeded to lose the second set 6-2 but fought back and won the third set 6-1. Rummel won both sets in No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1. In No. 4 doubles, Moraes lost to the Cardinals 7-6(7-2), 6-4. Hewes lost the first set in No. 5 singles, 7-5, but came back to win the second set 7-5. The final set went to the Cardinals 6-4. No. 6 singles saw King take on Catholic, who dropped the two sets 7-5, 6-0.
The Gophers hit the court next on Tuesday, April 7th at Shenandoah for a 4pm match.
