Strong Performances Lead Gophers to 6-1 Win Over Wilkes
BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (7-6 overall, 4-2 conference) hosted the Wilkes University Colonels (5-6 overall, 1-4 conference) on Sunday afternoon. After strong individual performances, the Gophers secured the 6-1 victory.
The Gophers swept doubles against the colonels. In No. 1 doubles, Gabe Naftoly and Tadeo Asprella teamed up for the first time this season and won 6-2. The No. 2 doubles team of Ian Hewes and Lucas Lucena earned the victory, 6-4, against Wilkes. While the No. 3 doubles team, Guilherme Moraes and George King, swept Wilkes, winning 6-0.
The Gophers won five of the singles matches. Naftoly beat the Colonels in No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 7-5. Asprella took on No. 2 singles, beating Wilkes 6-1, 6-2. Moraes added a third singles win. He beat the Colonels in No. 3 singles 6-4 in the first set and 6-3 in the second set. No. 4 singles saw Hewes take on Wilkes. He lost the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-5, and then dropped the second set 6-4. In No. 5 singles, Carlo Cermeno Cortes swept his first set, 6-0, and won the second set 6-4. In the final singles match, Daniel Gigatti defeated Wilkes in No. 6 singles. He won the first set 6-1 and swept the second set 6-0.
The Gophers' next match is Wednesday, April 15th at Lycoming. The match begins at 3pm.
