BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (9-6 overall, 5-2 conference) hosted the University of Scranton Royals (7-8 overall, 4-2 conference) on Saturday afternoon in a conference match-up. Goucher won the contest 5-2.
The match started with the Gophers winning the doubles point. The No. 1 pair of Gabe Naftoly and Tadeo Asprella beat Scranton 7-6. In No. 2 singles, Lucas Lucena and Ian Hewes lost in a close match, 7-6. George King and Guilherme Moraes won No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
The Gophers continued their momentum, winning four singles matches. In No. 1 singles, Naftoly won the first set 6-1, but lost the second set 6-1, taking the match to a tiebreaker, where he fell 14-12. Aprella won No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Moraes beat the Royals in the first set of No. 3 singles, 6-1, then lost the second set 6-2. The match went on to a point tiebreaker, where Scranton defeated him 10-7. In No. 4 singles, Hewes won both sets 6-3. King won No. 5 singles, sweeping both sets 6-0. The last match of the contest was Carlo Cermeno Cortes taking on the Royals in No. 6 singles. He won both sets, sweeping 6-0.
The Gophers return to action on Sunday, April 18, to take on Drew in a 2pm contest.
