Gophers Win Close Match Against Millersville
BALTIMORE, MD- The Goucher College Gophers (10-6 overall, 5-2 conference) won in a close match against the Millersville University Marauders (2-11 overall, 1-4 conference) on Thursday evening, winning the contest 4-3.
The match started with the Gophers winning two of the three games in doubles, clinching the point. The No. 1 doubles pair, Gabe Naftoly and Tadeo Asprella, defeated Millersville 6-2. In No. 2 singles, Guilherme Moraes and George King won in a tiebreaker 7-6(6-1). The final doubles of the match consisted of Lucas Lucena and Ian Hewes. Lucena and Hewes fell to the Marauders 7-6(6-3) in No. 3 doubles.
Naftoly took on Millersville in No. 1 singles, winning 7-5 and 6-3. In No. 2 singles, Asprella beat the Marauders 6-1, 6-2. Moraes won No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-4. No. 4 singles saw Hewes take on Millersville. He won the first set 6-2 but dropped the second set 7-6(7-5). Millersville won the match in the tiebreaker, scoring 10-6 in points. Carlo Cermeno Cortes fell to Millersville 6-1, 6-3 in No. 5 singles. Wrapping up singles was Lucena. He lost to the Marauders 6-4 in the first set and 7-5 in the second set during No. 6 singles.
The Gophers return to action on Saturday, April 25th to take on the Rangers of Drew University in a rescheduled match.
