Gophers Fall in Conference Championship Match to Moravian
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Goucher College Gophers (13-7 overall, 9-3 conference) traveled to South Williamsport to take on the Moravian University Greyhounds (15-5 overall, 11-0 conference) on Sunday afternoon in the Landmark Conference Championship match. After an extended close match, the Gophers fell 4-3.
The Gophers opened the match, winning the doubles point. The No. 2 match finished first, with Tadeo Asprella and Ian Hewes beating the Greyhounds 6-3. The No. 1 doubles team, consisting of Gabe Naftoly and Benedikt Rummel, clinched the doubles point, winning 6-4. Due to the Gophers clinching the doubles point, No. 3 doubles did not finish their match. The team of Guilherme Moraes and George King stopped their match with a score of 5-4.
No. 3 singles was the first completed match with Rummel beating Moravian 6-4. 6-1. In No. 6 singles, King lost both sets, 6-3, 6-2. Naftoly took both sets in No. 1 singles. He won his first set 6-2 and his second set 6-4. The next match to conclude was No. 5 singles. Hewes lost to Moravian 6-2 in both sets. This brought the Greyhounds within one.
In No. 2 singles, Asprella won the first set 6-4, but lost the second set 6-3, following an injury. Asprella could not overcome Moravian, losing the third set 6-1. Moraes took Moravian to a tiebreaker in No. 4 singles. He lost the first set 6-2 but fought back to win the second set 6-1. He fell to the Greyhounds in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2). This set gave Moravian the fourth and final point needed to secure the 4-3 win.
This championship match concluded the Gophers 2026 Spring season. Goucher returns to the court in Fall 2026.
