Rooney, Spitznagel Join Martin in Top 10
WINCHESTER, Va. - The first three Goucher runners to cross the finish line this evening at the Shenandoah Cross Country Festival were separated by only :21. More importantly, each was among the top 10 performers in the 8,000-meter race and that allowed the Gophers to finish as a solid runner-up to McDaniel in the overall team scoring.

WINCHESTER, Va. - The first three Goucher runners to cross the finish line this evening at the Shenandoah Cross Country Festival were separated by only :21. More importantly, each was among the top 10 performers in the 8,000-meter race and that allowed the Gophers to finish as a solid runner-up to McDaniel in the overall team scoring.
Goucher's top performer was sophomore Zach Martin (Victor, NY/Victor Central), who completed the race in 31:39, good for sixth place. Freshman Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and junior Matt Spitznagel (Parkton, MD/Friends School of Baltimore) followed in eighth and ninth places, respectively, with Rooney turning in a time of 31:49, which was :06 faster than Spitznagel.
After Rooney and Spitznagel, the next Goucher runners to come in were freshmen Brendan Ference (Smallwood, NY/Monticello) in 20th place and Adam Scipione (Walpole, MA/Walpole) in 21st. Ference was clocked at 34:01 and Scipione at 34:21.
The individual champion was Dustin Sweeny from Shenandoah. His winning time was 30:12.
The team title went to McDaniel, which collected 29 points. Goucher scored 55 points to finish ahead of Shenandoah (83), Penn St.-Altoona (95), Montgomery (124) and Marymount (135) in the team scoring.
